His 1971 Aereo-plain album was a major influence on the "progressive bluegrass" movement. What I wrote is my honest opinion.John Hartford (1937-2001) first gained recognition in the late 1960s as the writer of "Gentle on My Mind." His individualistic songwriting and banjo style landed him a regular guest spot on The Smothers Brothers Show and The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. And I'd also like to mention, that my opinion on the Stelling and the Deering have nothing to do with that I have a Stelling for sale. If you are interested, look what they cost new here in Europe and send me a reasonable offer and I'm sure we could work something out. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to write this here or not (mods let me know and I'll delete it in that case), but if you are interested in the Stelling, I have a practically new one here in Sweden (with an upgraded radiused fingerboard), so I can give you free shipping to the UK and no custom fee's on your end. ![]() The woodies sound best when setup fairly tight to my ears. I actually think it's easier to setup a good flathead for a darker, more mellow tone which I prefer, without loosing volume and responsiveness. It's got a lot of horse power! But in the end, I think I'm just more of a flathead guy. I spent a lot of time trying different setups on both and the Stelling has a wider spectrum were it sounds good to me. In my opinion, the Stelling is a louder, more responsive instrument. ![]() I have owned two full flange Deering Hartford's and currently own a Stelling Afton star (which I'm actually trying to sell here in the classifieds too). Has anyone here have experience in playing either or both. I believe these two banjos are lighter than a full tone ring banjo. ![]()
